These Towers Have Shape-Shifting Sunshades That React To Sunlight
These beautiful twin office towers in Abu Dhabi borrow from the old Arab architectural elements to create an innovative way of protecting yourself from the sun. The two towers are superimposed by a mechanized geometric “skin” with triangular panels that follow the sun to block it.
The design of the sunscreen of Aedas Architects was inspired by the Masharabiya, a beautiful shape of ornate sunscreen that protects the windows of the Arab world from sunlight and prying eyes. The screens, controlled by computers. Open, close and even travel horizontally to block the sun. The 145 m high towers below, which were completed in 2012, are covered with glass, so that solar screens reduce the heat generated by sunlight in the building at least 50% and probably also help with the air conditioning bill!
